CORFU
ISLAND 2001
A tour
of the Island is a worthwhile journey as the coastlines vary from
East to West some
have beautiful sandy beaches while others
are rocky with pebble and shingle but the water is always crystal
clear and blue and the views are stunning. You can now make the short trip
across the Corfu channel and visit Albania : it was not always
possible and in the past the mid channel border was rigidly enforced by
both Governments . In the late 1940s British Warships sank after hitting
mines: Albania refused to take pay compensation. the U.K. Government
froze Albanian gold bullion assets and still hold it today.
Thankfully though, the situation is no longer tense and the relationship
between all the countries is now more open. As a child Gerald Durrel
lived on the Island with his family and it was there that he
developed his interest in natural history and of course went on to become
a world famous Author whose books include "My family and other
animals" which was adapted for T. V. and filmed on location in
Corfu by the BBC during the late 1980s and is currently the "Classic Drama
" on BBC Radio 4.
