Kefelonia  :  Kephelonia  :  Cephalonia

whichever way you spell it this Island is a stunner

This is a composite of 4 photos processed in Ulead 360 programme

Which ever way you spell it it will cast a spell on you as this fertile Island is a stunner.

Dedicated to Jill & Barry with thanks for allowing me to share their photos with you.

It was my Daughter Jill's first visit to a Greek Island and needless to say she has fallen in love with them and is looking forward to a swift return.

The largest Island in the Ionian Sea is a wonderful place to visit not only  for the beautiful Cave_at_melissani._2.jpg (139253 bytes) Cave_at_melissani.jpg (171007 bytes)Beaches and countless Tavernas,  it is also rich in History. It is known that the Island was inhabited as long ago as 6000bc.. and the inhabitants travelled and traded with  Islands in CYCLADES: although this seems to have ceased around 1500bc when Santorini tore itself apart.    Geological  wonders like the Pits where sea  water pours endlessly  into the ground and seeminglyDeeper_into_Cave_melissani._feb.jpg (149754 bytes)  Cave_lake_melissani.jpg (183859 bytes)disappears although it now realized that it travels under the Island and emerges at the lakes at Melissani and  Karavomylos  In common with many Islands Kephelonia has had its share of invaders and occupiers. During the Greek war of Independence  against  the Turks in 1823, Lord Byron lived on Kephelonia. It was whilst there he wrote Don Juan. He later lost his life at Messolongi  during the Siege by the Turks . He fought on the side of the Greeks.  In 1864 when British rule ended  Kephelonia was finally united with Greece.

On the South West Coast, the capital ARGOSTOLI was completely rebuilt on the site on the site of the old town that was devastated by the earthquake of 1953.

The causeway across the lagoon was built whilst Kephelonia was under English rule and the multi arched bridge shortens the journey to the opposite shore.

The top of Mt. Enos/Ainos offers a spectacular panorama of the Island and the highest Peak Megalos Soros (1,628 m.) is only a short distance away.

The beaches on Kephelonia are many and varied and make a perfect base to just sit and relax when you take a break from sightseeing

Not to missed is a cruise along the coast of Kephelonia on a Glass Bottomed Boat. It includes a picnic on the beautiful Red Beach. Wearing your designer clothes on this trip is not a good idea as you will have to wade ashore.

And of Course No Greek Island would be Complete without its Gorgeous
