Hippocrates.jpg (35867 bytes)The Birthplace of Hippocrates, widely accepted as the Father of Medicine and founder ofHippocrates_Tree.jpg (166699 bytes) the first school of medicine; even today, some 2460 years after his death in 357 BC, here in the UK those who study and qualify as medical practitioners still take the ancient Hippocratic Oath that includes the powerful imperative for the care of the sick, "First Do No Harm" .

Alexander the Great conquered Kos in 336 BC and was succeeded by Ptolemies. During the Historic_Kos_1.JPG (41552 bytes)Historic_Kos.JPG (41552 bytes)Byzantine period Kos was once again a prosperous Island Raids by enemies that included the Saracens made it very dangerous place to be  In 1315The Knights of St. John of Rhodes took the Island and around1400 AD started to built the Fortress at the Harbour entrance from materials salvaged from the Kos_town.JPG (35056 bytes)Historic_Kos_2.JPG (40684 bytes)ruins of the town devastated by an earthquake. After taking Rhodes in 1522 the Turks also took Kos and held it until 1912 when the Italians occupied it. During 1933 Kos was again devastated by another earthquake and was finally became part of Greece in 1948.

KEFALOS

With a climate that is mild for most of the year, hours of  unbroken Old_Village.JPG (46913 bytes) Beach_late_Sept.JPG (40079 bytes)sunshine  and  beautiful beaches it is inevitable that Kos will become an increasingly popular tourist destination. Kefalos is my personal favourite resort on KOS. Since my first visit in 1994 I have returned on 2 occasions . although the resort has grown  it is still small enough  to offer a really quiet, relaxing holiday that gives theView_over_Keflaos.JPG (51349 bytes) real flavour of the Greek  Islands. Highly recommended Keflaos_Wooded_Panorama.JPG (50681 bytes)for anyone making  their first  visit to the Greek Island as it also offers the opportunity to visit small neighbouring islands including, Patmos, Kalymnos, NISYROS and Symi  With the introduction of  a fast Hydrofoil service a day trip to Rhodes makes an enjoyable day out
