KEFALOS
As stated
on previous pages Greece and the Greek Islands are taking the brunt of the
current world events and are short of visitors this year. The following photos
show how quiet the beaches were in June and July. From a personal perspective in
some ways it was nice to have so much space on the beaches, in the tavernas and
restaurants, but for the lovely Greek people it is not what they want to see.
Everything is in place to give everyone the perfect holiday so I hope you will
take advantage of the many vacancies and late bargains and have yourself a great
holiday and help the Island economy at the same time I'm going back again before
the season ends so perhaps we will meet over a drink or two.

September
2002
Just had to
go back again .
The
irresistible magnetism, the people I've met and the prospect of the warm
sunshine of Kos was to much to ignore. Having started the journey ( which was
almost on time) it takes around 3 1/2 hours flying time from my local airport to
reach Kos. Once above the clouds sun always shines and the sunsets are
spectacular My journey was routed over the Netherlands / Germany / Austria
/ Hungary / Bulgaria. Because of the almost unbroken blanket of thick
cloud no land was visible until we were over the Aegean Sea skirting the coast
of Turkey. The sight of the coastal illumination of Kos are really something
from the air. Once all the luggage is collected it is only a 10 to 15 minute
journey to Kefalos, so no time was wasted in getting out to the restaurants and
tavernas, meeting up with old friends, enjoying the Greek pace of life
again and feeling at home straight away.

This
"end of season" holiday was taken just to enjoy Kefalos with no other
trips or sightseeing included. Relaxing on the beach, a little walking
and a lot of eating and drinking was plan A, I'm pleased to report that
everything went according to that plan. There were a couple of days when it was
a little to windy to spend all day on the beach but there are so many different
routes you can walk from the beach to the village, all are unique and it's a
great way to see the surrounding countryside.
It was quite noticeable
that there were many more visitors around and the locals confirmed this.
September has been better for them although numbers are well down on previous
years.
The weather
in late September was really quite good. As a result apart from a few short
walks the majority of time was spent soaking up the sunshine. On 2
occasions, the winds that make Kefalos bay a sailing and windsurfers paradise
were strong enough to make it a little uncomfortable for sunbathing. No worries
though, watching the world go by, the countless angler and the coming and going
of the local pleasure and fishing boats while dangling your feet over the end of
the jetty at the harbour is not the worse thing in the world to be doing.

Another day
was filled with a leisurely walk that started from the ruins of St.
Stephanos basilica. A stroll along the beach until you reach Captain Johns
restaurant near the car park will bring you to the bottom of the hill near the
filling station and Police station. For pedestrians, this route to the village
has been improved over the years by the provision of "easy going"
flights of steps that cut out
the sharp bends on the hill. The village is
always worth a visit as it offers exciting views over Kefalos bay . There
are also the old windmills and on the hill behind them are several state of the
art modern electric generating wind turbines.

In the Old village itself
there are many back roads and alley to be explored and the bakeries
make some
delicious local delicacies while the Restaurants and tavernas offer
anything from a snack to a full meal. By leaving the village on the top
road that meanders towards Kos Town take you through a variety of scenery and
conditions, on the exposed parts the wind is strong but when sheltered by the
hillsides in a dip in the road can be really hot. . Just before re joining
the main road back to Kefalos you are close to the narrowest point of the Island
and by looking left to right you can see the water on both sides of the Island.
Another 15 minute stroll takes you down the hill and back where you started.
Another excellent day spent on Kos.
