Rhodes/Rhodes
Town
A personal comment :
Rhodes is an exceptional tourist attraction and you need all the time you have
to take it in. Sadly since my last visit some 6 years ago the arrival of
"Time Share" touts have spoilt it. At every turn
on my sightseeing tour of the town these touts kept appearing beside me on
foot and often on motor scooters trying to interest me in their wares.
Tourists who politely expressed no interest were often subjected to a
barrage of rude and aggressive behaviour. The same touts stopped me about
a dozen times. I believe the Greek Authorities should use all the powers
they have to ban the activities of the often unpleasant people that almost
ruined my visit before Rhodes becomes like the Canary Islands

What can you
say about Rhodes Town that has not already been said.
To do it
justice you would need to spend a few days there and I hope in the
future
to do just that. The words "Medieval Town" conjure up a picture of a dead
place that is crammed with ruins and artifacts but Rhodes Town is alive,
bustling and vibrant . Over 6000 people live and work there in the same
buildings that were built and occupied by the Knights of St. John over six
hundred years ago. The walls of this Medieval Town are 12m thick and the
moat is 21 m wide and over 4km long : on a few days a year visitors are
allowed to walk around the
walls
The Old Town
the New Town and the harbour are places that needs to be visited
personally to appreciate the magnitude of the task that were undertaken by our
ancestors when they did not have the benefit of all the mechanical aids we now
enjoy to construct our modern buildings. I doubt many of our buildings will
still be in daily use in 600 years time.
I hope my
photos give you an idea of why Rhodes Town is well worth visiting
