Rhodes/Valley of Butterflies |

|
PETALOUDES This unique Valley is almost a self contained biosphere . The ravine that forms the valley is covered with luxuriant plant growth and has an abundant supply of water as a result the valley remains cool even on the hottest summer days. Between the months of June and September thousands of Butterflies (Jersey Tiger Moths) flock to the valley. It is thought they are attracted by the distinctive strong aroma and coloured resin of the Storax tree. Many of the butterflies flutter about but are mostly resting on the branches and trunks of the trees. On first appearance they blend in to the bark but on closer inspection you realize the tree is just covered with resting butterflies. It must be a spectacular sight when the whole population of Butterflies take to the air and form a red cloud After a day in the hot sunshine of Rhodes this is the place to visit and at your own pace explore the valley using the many wooden bridges that crisscross the streams, pools and waterfalls PHOTO ALBUM .
