ZAKYNTHOS
The Venetians named
it ZANTE and this beautiful Island is part of the Ionian Islet
group that includes Corfu
and
Kephalonia in fact the latter is only 8 nautical miles Zante. KYLLINI only
10 nautical miles away makes
it a short and easy trip by ferry to the Greek mainland. Much of Zante
Town was demolished by the great earthquake of 1953.Thankfully
parts of the Island were undamaged and with all gorgeous sandy beaches, clear
blue waters and landscapes is still one of the nicest Greek Islands
to visit. In common with all of Greece a genuine and warm welcome always
awaits visitors.
I have been to
Zante on 3 occasions and being one of the smaller Islands it is easy
to travel around the coast by one of the many pleasure crafts or by road and
visit its many outstanding
beauty spots. My favourite
resorts are on the flatter eastern side of the Island where the best beaches
are. ALIKES, ALIKANAS and TSILIVI . South of these are the
resorts of LAGANAS and KALAMAKI , the most crowded beaches on Zante where,
despite this, the rare and endangered sea going Turtle
"Caretta - Caretta comes ashore during its breeding season and lays
its eggs. Only two months later the are hatched and the young follow their
mothers to the sea. It is good to see that despite the importance of the
tourism to the Greek economy, the Turtles and their hatching grounds are
protected.

In ALIKES I stayed at the Hotel Piccadilly. A Restaurant with
accommodation available, run by the Metaxa family and I highly recommend
it,

An
Excellent site to visit that is full of information about Caretta Caretta
is that of the
Sea
Turtle Protection Society of Greece at

The saddest
part of any Greek Island Holiday is having to leave it,
As you can see Zante's Airport is not the Worlds largest
